Hello, Olá, Bonjour!
I’m Naomi. Hope you are well, and thank you for taking the time to learn more about me and the services I offer to soon-to-be, new, and repeat parents!
I’ve always had a strong passion for feminism, women’s rights, and equity amongst people of different genders, races, sexes, cultures, and sexual orientations. In university I started uncovering my passion for childbearing, birth and postpartum while I studied midwifery. In Ontario, midwives are autonomous primary health care providers for folks during pregnancy, birth, loss, and postpartum up to 6 weeks.
I loved it while I studied it for 3 years and had a 4-month clinical placement; I simply loved supporting people through such a transformative time in their lives. I love watching people become parents and empowering them the whole way. (And I think babies are awesome). That’s when I realized my true calling was to be a doula; I’m a natural supporter. Health care wasn’t for me: I shine in the more nuanced, personal care; the kind you can’t describe in a textbook, can’t prescribe, isn’t medical. So I began my doula training, and am now certified with ProDoula and the Association of Ontario Doulas.
And I also noticed a trend. I noticed that a lot of emphasis in preparing during pregnancy is on birth, and not enough on preparing for life after the baby arrives (no matter the outcome). Postpartpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorder rates are high, and it’s more than just a women’s issue, it’s a public health concern! When new parents are supported and cared for, everyone benefits; especially that new baby and other loved ones!
And as someone who has struggled with depression/anxiety and has found ways to get through it, I am passionate about improving mental health. I know of the pressures that can float around us. But I’m confident we can build our self-esteem, our self-love and our support networks and start feeling better, because we don’t have to and shouldn’t do this alone! And usually this doesn’t just happen spontaneously and easily, it may take some prep. I can help with that, and with making life a little easier and brighter with you and yours during this major transition period.
I look forward to meeting you!
